FAQ

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who did 3 more years of University after graduating dental school. They are essentially a general dentist with extra training. Orthodontists not only straighten teeth with braces or Invisalign, but they also modify a patient’s growth to utilize growth potential. In adults who have jaw discrepancies, the orthodontist works closely with the oral surgeon to prepare the patient for surgery of the jaw.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial examination by the age of 7. This way, problems can be addressed before they do irreparable damage. Please see Treatment In Children section.

Orthodontic fees are determined by the complexity of the problem and the duration of the treatment. We will determine the cost of full treatment during the initial consultation. We offer flexible payment plans in order for you to stay within your budget. Several insurance companies offer partial coverage for orthodontic care and orthodontic expenses may also be deducted as medical expenses.

Every patient is unique and treatment time depends on the complexity of the problem. On average, treatment times vary from 1.5 to 2 years.

Appointments are usually every 4-8 weeks, depending on what the treatment is.

The first two appointments are usually the longest. After treatment has begin, visits are generally quick.

Placement of braces themselves is not painful. However, some amount of discomfort should be expected after initial activation. Ibuprofen (which is the same thing as Motrin or Advil) works best on tooth pain.

Invisalign has improved drastically over the last 14 years. Things that weren’t able to be corrected before are now able to be corrected with these clear aligner trays. The best way to know if you were a good candidate for Invisalign is to have an orthodontic consultation.

All hard foods should be avoided, as they can break the braces off, bend wires and loosen bands.

Yes! You should be seeing the general dentist every 6 months with or without orthodontic treatment. They are the ones that check for cavities and give you your regular dental cleanings.
